The Lion, African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, and Leopard are Africa’s big five. They earned this title based on their hunting difficulty.
This year, we are celebrating Africa’s majestic Big Five. Representing the continent’s size, strength, speed, courage, and pride; these tin creatures are the perfect accessory to a home or office.
These decorative pieces are made by Murenga Arts and Crafts, an artisan group in Zimbabwe helping artists earn a living by recycling scrapped metal. Murenga Arts and Crafts brings these unique items to western markets, coordinates the work and ensures that Fair Trade practices are in place and payments are made fairly in the midst of an unpredictable economy.
Zimbabwe Slum Blitz
Life in Zimbabwe’s slums is always difficult. In 2005, the estranged President Robert Mugabe ordered Operation Murambatsvina (Drive Out Rubbish) in which 700,000 people lost their homes or livelihoods and another 2.4 million people were affected. Murenga Arts and Crafts artisans are doing their best to earn a sustainable income by making beautiful art that represents the pride of Africa. We are excited to stand with the people of Zimbabwe and invite you to join Gifts With Humanity in supporting these artists.
On behalf of all our partners overseas, we want to thank you for supporting fair trade. Your shopping choices are reducing poverty and increasing opportunity!
